Trekking e-bikes offer flexibility like no other two-wheeler. In this guide, we will show you whether it is the right choice for you and what distinguishes the e-trekking bike.
What is a trekking e-bike?
Comfortable, but still at home on all routes: The trekking e-bike is characterized above all by its versatile areas of application. Trekking bikes are designed for high and permanent loads as well as for everyday traffic. That’s what makes them so popular.
So that the bike can take part in the long tours on two wheels, high demands are placed on quality and durability. The frames of the trekking e-bikes are therefore usually kept in the classic diamond and trapezoidal shape. Step-throughs for comfortable stop-and-go are also available. The robust yet light aluminum has established itself as the material.
A trekking bike must also be comfortable to ride when the ground is unpaved, wet or bumpy. The suspension fork and occasionally even a sprung seat post ensure more riding comfort on off-road trekking e-bikes. Suspension of the rear end is rather rare and only on very high-quality e-trekking bikes such as G-Force ebike t42 to find. Most trekking bikes use 28-inch tires to ensure smooth handling.
With a well thought-out trekking e-bike, you are prepared for all kinds of adventures. Trekking e-bikes are suitable for long tours and allow you to easily attach luggage and saddlebags. Accessories such as mudguards and lighting systems should be robust and durable.
On the trekking e-bike you sit comfortably for a long time due to the moderate seating position of mostly around 60°. The seating position is not quite as upright as on a city bike, but not as sporty as on a racing bike or mountain bike either. The trekking bike is somewhere between suitability for everyday use and a thirst for adventure. Therefore, there are also many possible forms and equipment.
Which drive on the e-trekking bike?
Trekking bikes cover large distances, are usually equipped with more weight and are also suitable for completing everyday journeys as quickly as possible. Rides with higher loads are no longer a problem and bring even more driving pleasure.
The vast majority of e-bikes today are equipped with mid -motors. This is a good decision, especially for an e-trekking bike.
With front-wheel drive, the center of gravity is rather unfavorable, which is why they have a rather unfavorable handling on rough terrain : The center of gravity of your bike is usually at the rear. If the ground is also relatively loose, the power of the front engine can cause your front wheel to spin. This can also happen on sandy or particularly slippery surfaces.
In general, however, the middle motor is also the first choice for trekking bikes. The mid-motor supports you when pedaling directly on the crank. Some newer models now even offer a second chain ring for even more gear ratios on the crank. Please note, however, that the selection of the right drive is also an individual matter. A trekking e-bike with rear-wheel drive can also be the right solution for you.
Trekking e-bikes with belt drive are also possible. In contrast to the chain, which stretches constantly and thus wears out the sprocket and chain ring over time, the belt requires much less maintenance. It also requires less maintenance if you often ride the trekking e-bike on dusty surfaces or through wind and weather.
